Waipahu is a diverse area of Oahu located just mauka (north) of the West Loch of Pearl Harbor. This one-time plantation area is now a bustling economic hub along Farrington Highway (lower Waipahu) with many strip malls, grocery stores, and auto dealers. Just off this thoroughfare are apartment zoned areas with many walk-up apartment buildings constructed in the 1960s and early 1970s along with single family homes in the Waipahu Uka and Waipahu Estates neighborhoods. The new Honolulu Area Rapid Transit (HART) rail line runs from Kapolei along Farrington Highway through Waipahu, creating excellent future investment opportunity for savvy investors of the older walk-up apartments. A newer neighborhood of Waipahu that many don't really consider Waipahu, is Waikele. Located just North of H-1, Waikele was developed in the late 1990s and early 2000s on former sugar cane fields. The master-planned neighborhood is distinctly different than the older areas of Waipahu with its tree-lined streets, Country Club, and premium outlet shopping mall.
